About the Event

For WEMA, collaboration is a state of mind. The five-piece collective – consisting of Tanzanian multi-instrumentalist Msafiri Zawose, producer Photay and Penya members Magnus P.I, Lilli Elina and Jimmy le Messurier – is an artistic pursuit founded on community; a space in which to harness the transformative power of connection. Translated from Swahili, ‘WEMA’ means kindness and benevolence – virtues that lie at the core of the project, and are reflected in the group’s world-embracing approach to music. “WEMA is a state of gratitude and belief, without sorrow or grief. It’s about giving your entire heart,” Msafiri declares.

A host of traditional folkloric rhythms, club culture motifs and DIY electronics mark the band’s distinct sound.

Drums, horn and vocals evoke Penya’s live performance from a world of euphoric  ritual and visceral dance scapes, ancient and future.

The bands debut LP "Superliminal" (Jan 2018) quickly achieved critical acclaim  from a host of taste makers and artists including Gilles Peterson,  Bonobo, Tom Ravenscroft, WorldWide FM, Jeremy Sole, Late Junction (BBC  Radio 3) and Boiler Room.  The band went on tour, quickly establishing  it’s dance floor ready, multi instrumental live show.

Kim's Kitchen is serving falafel with pitta breads, hummus, pickled red cabbage, yoghurt dressing and salad.

Vegan & gluten free options will be available, as always.
